Imagine nothingness, Emptiness, Not even chaos. And the darkness was without form and void… And God said, “Let there be light….” Blaze of stars, Glories immense, White-hot and turbulent, Too great for us. Spinning planets, Jewels in the sky to praise Your glory. The heavens declare the glory of God… You could have kept it so, It would have been enough, Angelic presences to praise Your glory, And silent worlds to offer witness. But Your love was not content… Your Spirit upon the waters breathed forth life… You said, “Fill the earth with every living thing…” So now remember, Remember oh little ones, Remember the kiss of the wind on your cheek, The scent of sweet grass in the sun, The sound of a meadowlark rising. Perhaps the first dawn was like this …. Remember from whom we received these gifts And give praise. All powerful and ever-living God, All creation rightly gives you thanks and praise. Oh Father of Mercy, Light Eternal, From You spring all good things. We behold the wonders You have wrought With eyes darkened By our own pride and futility.. Open our eyes to your majesty and power again, To your beauty and truth, To your love made manifest In the gift of our world, Of our very selves. Let us behold You in creation, Bow down in awe, In gratitude, and in love. And sing with the angelic choirs, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts We are but stubble in the wind before You, Nothing at all without You. All life, all holiness comes from You, Almighty Father How great, how great is that holiness! Into the abyss of our nothingness You poured out Your love, That we might become your children. You, who spun the worlds into being, Who ignited the stars, You stooped toward us with eyes of love, In mercy you made us. (Unspeakable, unfathomable mercy!) We are the beloved, We, the wretched, chosen, beloved made glorious by Your mercy. Let the people say: Hesed Your mercy endures forever. Limitless, loving, extravagant, prevenient, passionate, Faithful, relentless, self-emptying Hesed. Crazy-in-love Hesed. Something so astounding: At the heart of the world is mercy. All manner of things will be well.
Parts in italics are words from Scripture or Catholic liturgy. The Hebrew word 'hesed' is one of the words used in that language to refer to God’s mercy, or lovingkindness. It is pronounced Hesed, or Chesed with the Ch very light.
