The end was so interesting—that what was being asked of you seemed one way but was another. This speaks so much to that ache of wanting to belong. How irrepressible it is.

And the beat goes on. I am realizing I am only about half way done! Is it OK for you, nothing too difficult?

Thank you Russell. I really value your opinion. Now, can you teach me to walk?

I take it one step at a time. After my open heart surgeries, I could barely walk two steps. So I walked two steps. The next day, I pushed myself to walk down one hallway in the hospital. The next day, a hallway and a quarter. And so on and so on. Every added step, even a single added step, matters!

Only the tiniest bit joking. I have heart failure and need to walk, but I am badly out of condition. Everywhere around here are hills, sometimes steep ones. I get out of breath on one flight of stairs.

I will walk with you anytime, Ann. If it’s one flight of stairs, that’s okay. Maybe tomorrow it’ll be two — one in the morning, one in the afternoon. Maybe the day, it’ll be three — one in morning, one at noon, one in afternoon. Even one single additional step means a lot!

When do you normally walk? I am on the west coast. Maybe you could be my accountability partner.
